Digsby beta 3/08
http://www.download.com/Digsby/3000-2150_4-10822157.htmlDigsby is a multiprotocol IM client, email notification tool, and social networking tool that lets you chat with all your friends on AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber with one simple to manage buddy list, lets you read and delete email easily, and keeps you up-to-date of your social networking accounts.
Digsby will easily be the instant messaging freeware of choice for the super social set. In addition to supporting the major IM networks--Yahoo, MSN, AIM, ICQ, Google Talk, and Jabber--Digsby also pulls in Web mail feeds, as well as access to MySpace, Twitter, and Facebook accounts. Updating Twitter is a breeze from the application's main interface, though users wishing to do anything more than read Facebook and MySpace news feeds will be redirected to their online accounts. Users can initiate text, video, and audio chat from the conversation window, and transfer files, send SMS, and compose e-mail. The notification pop-ups for every activity can get distracting, though a deep preference options control nearly every aspect of the display, including a wide variety of skins. Digsby is off to a strong start and can only get better from here. The question is if the other multiprotocol IM apps will catch up or offer something equally new and exciting.

http://www.download.com/Pidgin/3000-2150_4-10281799.htmlPidgin (formerly known as Gaim) is a multi-protocol instant messaging client for BSD and Windows. It is compatible with AIM (Oscar and TOC protocols), ICQ, MSN Messenger, Yahoo, IRC, Jabber, Gadu-Gadu, and Zephyr networks. Pidgin users can log in to multiple accounts on multiple IM networks simultaneously. This means that you can be chatting with friends on AOL Instant Messenger, talking to a friend on Yahoo Messenger, and sitting in an IRC channel all at the same time. It also goes beyond that and provides many unique features. A few popular features are Buddy Pounces, which give the ability to notify you, send a message, play a sound, or run a program when a specific buddy goes away, signs online, or returns from idle; and plugins, consisting of text replacement, a buddy ticker, extended message notification, and iconify on away. Version 2.4.2 has minor tweaks and improvements, including adjusting the typing area size, adding a plugin for a Send button, and more, as well as other bug-fixes.
This open-source messaging application lets you access multiple IM networks from one window, including Google Talk and MySpaceIM as well as lesser-known protocols such as Jabber and Gadu-Gadu. Pidgin's biggest change is the redesigned interface. The Buddy List can be viewed in Basic or Advanced mode, and the most important features, including the Plug-in List, have been graduated from the Preferences window into their own panes. Twenty-two plug-ins come prepackaged as Pidgin repositions itself as a highly extensible chat client. The IM features are unimpeachable: smileys (you can find tons of emoticons on the developer's site), file transfers, and multiperson chats. The Buddy Pounce feature lets you automatically perform certain actions (play a sound, execute a command, open an IM window) when a contact signs on or off. Pidgin also gets lots of intangibles right: logging and time-stamping, for instance, are well-executed and easy to access. However, it lacks IP telephony and video conferencing, and there are still some bugs--most notably in the Help menu. Still, Pidgin remains a highly recommended text-only messaging app.

Internet Relay Chat is not as well-known as ICQ, even though it successfully combines chat and messaging without annoying ads. The IRC network is a virtual meeting place where people from all over the world can meet and talk. With mIRC, you can choose from an unlimited number of existing chat rooms based on personal interests, or you can create your own channels with family and friends. IRC is more advanced than simple messenging, so it may take a while to get started. With a bit of browsing, though, you'll find that the mIRC interface allows easy access to IRC features. It guides you through the initial stages, including selecting from a wide list of servers. You can connect to more than one IRC server at once and chat through proxy. By creating your own channel, you can even set up a virtual meeting with colleagues. This program suits advanced users keen to expand their chat-client functionalities. For first-time users, mIRC offers the most functionality of any chat program available, which can be overwhelming at first--but if you read the help files you'll be on your way to using all the features mIRC has to offer. 45Paltalk 8.2
http://www.paltalk.com
One chat client for them all An abundance of features and a large community make Paltalk enjoyable for text, audio, and video chatting. Adult content is hidden by default. Parental controls employ a password to change settings or block groups. Moderators enforce the rules and establish who gets to speak to the whole room. G rooms are all-ages. R rooms allow cussing, but not sexual language, and anything goes in A rooms. You can print and save room sessions. Right-click a person's name to view his or her profile and Webcam picture, invite him or her to a private room, or send a file. Signing on to your AOL, ICQ, MSN, or Yahoo account automatically imports your buddy list. The abundance of ads on each window, even popping up while you're joining a room, might motivate users to pay for a subscription. Free accounts only can open three still-image Webcams, whereas paid users can open more windows of full-motion video. The installation window offers to install My Search and eFax. Uninstalling Paltalk leaves an icon on the desktop. Still, the thousands of rooms for politics, karaoke, advice, and porn mean that anybody can find a connection on Paltalk. 41Camfrog Video Chat 3.81
