Running Shoes

A lightweight, breathable one-piece Nike Flyknit upper, engineering different densities directly into the knit for precise support: a snug fit at the arch, heel and forefoot. The aforementioned mid-height collar was added to facilitate lockdown, both physically and sensorially, and Nike Flywire cables were knitted in for additional strength and a close, dynamic fit. The midsole has also been revamped with new dual-injection technology, fusing two Lunarlon foam pieces into one without the need for glue, while laser siping on the side of the midsole facilitates cushioning and targeted flexibility. All these elements combined produce a running shoe with a truly fluid feel and superior comfort even on long runs. The Nike LunarEpic Flyknit is available now in a wide range of colourways.

The key features here are that the upper uses the ankle-high shape and Flyknit fabric familiar from Nike's football boots. It's like wearing a very grippy sock attached to a sole, rather than a traditional trainer. The laces almost disappear into the fabric, and breathability/ventilation is much better than you might expect.

In the midsole, an injected Phylon core foam under your foot is paired with a slightly firmer injected unit sole carrier foam to deliver what Nike calls, "a super plush ride." The sole is almost like an animal footprint, with molded pods for grip and impact absorbtion. Rubber under the toe should mean it holds out longer as the miles mount up, too.

The shoe's designer, Phil McCartney, describes LunarEpic as nothing less than, "the beginning of a new era in Nike Running."

So first up the 'vanishing fit' of the new uppers with their collar design does make these superbly comfortable on the foot. The first time you slip them on, you forget they're there. There's a snug, sock-like feel that, a bit like compression clothing, has that feeling of security and comfort. It manages that without making your feet feel restricted, mainly because the toe box allows plenty of movement. On the road or a treadmill, there are good support, but they are not so well on the light stoney trails.

The rubber-free outsole is also made of Lunarlon foam, with laser-cut geometric patterns for traction and a series of individual "pistons" that move independently for a more fluid ride. Can be worn with or without socks, but, if you prefer them, we suggest lightweight, no-show socks.

Pros: Excellent ride and transition quality, great outsole grip, lightweight, supportive midsole

Cons: An internal heel seam which is likely to chafe the skin over your Achilles. The outsole traps a lot of debris, the dual-insole approach doesn't exactly work, no optional widths, expensive.
